Community rules

The Bonn-O community is for dog and cat parents and the people who care for their pets. It works because people are kind, honest and careful with each other's privacy. These are the rules, in plain words.

The rules

  1. Be kind

No insults, name-calling or piling on. Disagree with an idea, never with a person.

  2. Dogs and cats first

This is a place for dog and cat parents and the people who care for them. Keep it to pets.

  3. Keep private things private

No phone numbers, home addresses, e-mail addresses or web links in posts. No photos of children, and no photos of other people without their yes.

  4. We are not vets

Replies are experience, not medical advice. If your pet seems unwell, call a vet now. Never suggest human medicines or doses.

  5. No selling or advertising

No offers, prices, discounts or animals for sale. Providers are welcome to share what they know, as themselves, without a sales pitch.

  6. Only real stories

Say only what is true. No fake reviews. If you were paid or given something for a post, say so.

  7. Respect animals

No cruelty, fights or pictures that celebrate hurting an animal.

  8. Report, do not argue

See something that breaks these rules? Use Report. A person from the Bonn-O team looks at every report.

Before your story appears

A person from the Bonn-O team reads a new member's first three stories, and every story from a provider, before it appears. That is usually done within a day. After three stories that follow the rules, yours appear at once and we look at them afterwards. If two different people report the same story, we hide it until a person has looked. We keep a record of every decision and who made it.

Photos and privacy

  • Post photos of your pet. Please do not post photos of children, or of other people who have not said yes.
  • Check the background of a photo: no house numbers, car number plates, name boards or letters.
  • When you add a photo we remove the place and time it was taken, and we make it smaller so it loads fast on a phone.
  • Your name is shown as you saved it in your Bonn-O profile. Your phone number and e-mail address are never shown.
  • You can remove your own story at any time from the story's page. Writing to us works too: see the privacy policy.

Health and safety

Other members share what happened to their pets. That can be useful, and it can be wrong for your pet. Vomiting, bleeding, fits, a swallowed object, something poisonous, trouble breathing, or a pet that has stopped eating: do not wait for replies. Call a vet now. Please never post doses of medicine, and never suggest human medicines for a pet.

If you care for pets for a living

Groomers, trainers, sitters, boarders, walkers and vets are very welcome. The best posts from you are the ones that teach: how to brush a double coat, what a calm boarding kennel looks like, why a puppy bites.

  • Post as yourself or your business, and say so. Do not pretend to be a customer.
  • No offers, prices, discounts, phone numbers or links in posts. People can find and book you on your Bonn-O page.
  • Do not ask people to review you, and do not write reviews of yourself or your competitors.
  • If we ask you to take something down, please do. If you are not sure it breaks a rule, ask us.

Reporting a problem, and what happens next

  1. Open the story and press Report. Choose what is wrong. You sign in to report so that a report always has a person behind it.
  2. A person from the Bonn-O team reads it. We look at every report within two working days, and sooner when it is about safety.
  3. If it breaks a rule we remove it, and we may ask the person to read the rules. If someone posts again and again against the rules, we close their access to the community.
  4. If you disagree with what we did, write to us from the Contact page and a different person will look again.

Complaints about content, and requests about your personal data, also go to our Grievance Officer. Their name and how to reach them are in the Terms of use and the privacy policy.
